Environment
The Foundation will support programs committed to responsible environmental stewardship. Specifically, it will focus on initiatives that protect our existing environment, expand and improve natural protected areas, and address long-term impacts of environmental degradation on both the planet and its inhabitants.
The program has three pillars:
Preservation and Restoration: We champion initiatives that actively protect our natural resources and habitats. This pillar underscores the urgency of preventing their loss, which can be costly, time-consuming, and ultimately impossible to fully recover. Where those losses have occurred, we support restoring and rebuilding natural habitat. Our support extends to expanding and safeguarding public lands.
Litigation: Recognizing the critical role of legal frameworks, we support efforts to defend existing environmental protections, especially those safeguarding preservation and public health. This pillar encompasses holding violators accountable and actively opposing the rollback of vital environmental regulations.
Health: We support proactive efforts to investigate and address the impact of environmental degradation on human health. This pillar includes testing to identify risks, education to raise awareness, networking to build solutions, and litigation to ensure accountability and protection.
Requests for Support
The Foundation accepts 1-2 page letters of interest (LOI) at any time. LOIs should clearly outline which pillar(s) the project would support. To be considered for a grant in 2025, LOIs must be received by June 30, 2025. Any letters received after that date will be considered for the following year’s grant cycle. LOIs should be sent to adrienne@thestonefamilyfoundation.org.
The Foundation awards grants between $30,000 and $50,000 with a duration of 12-18 months.
The Foundation’s Environment Program targets, local (California), national, and international efforts; however, litigation support must be focused in the U.S.
